2 out of 5 stars Good effort, but fails in most areas.   October 16, 2008
The umbrella chronicles is an attempt to turn the resident evil franchise into a more action oriented game and while they have put the effort in, it falls short in most areas. The game follows the storylines of resident evil zero, 1 and 3 (in an attempt to get nostalgia-bias in it's reviews but apparantly avoiding the best entries in the series) in the style of a lightgun game. However, i would not reccommend this to any fans of lightgun games as it has an extremly slow pace (to pad out the length), and the gameplay seems more relied on luck than reflexes, as your weapons are severly underpowered, and zombies show little reaction to being shot, still continuing to attack you. It also has an awkward control scheme which only functions if you hold the nunchuck free, and not place it in the wii zapper. It also has very bad responsivness, ignoring your movments of the controler when prompted onscreen (often resulting in instant death) but accepting them other times when there is no differance in the player's action. It is also the least lastisfying game in terms of shooting zombies, there is very little blood and even less, unsatisfying sound effects and enemies do not react to being shot until they die. If you are after a zombie game give this a miss and get resident evil 4 wii edition (the best zombie game ever made), or if you are after a wii zapper game, get house of the dead or ghost squad, both of which offer fast paced action and you are likely to get more gameplay out of them, despite their shorter length.

2 out of 5 stars Boring   August 31, 2008

Graphics are good for the wii and technically it is good BUT.... it's slow, boring, very hard and the bossess are stupid. you have to hit a single pixel on their head to kill them and it just gets frustrating. all the enemies are the same and it gets very repetetive. the dodge mechanism is rubbish, and the light gun doesn't aim properly as it has no calibration tool. if you want a zombie shooter get House of the Dead. it's much more fun and you don't need the nunchuck, with the venom light gun and the calibration tool it is a proper light gun shooter.

2 out of 5 stars BORING!!   August 6, 2008

It really pains me to say this, but Resident Evil : Umbrella Chronicles, is one of the worst games i've played.
I'm a huge resi fan, I enjoyed each one in different ways (on ps2, Wii and gamecube) but this verion was a complete waste of money.
I'd much MUCH rather play the original on ps1.
Boo hoo.

4 out of 5 stars A good solid shoot-em-up with a Resident Evil flavour   July 30, 2008
Okay, lots of people complaining its not like RE4 and you cant free-roam but did you not check out the reviews and press before buying? As first-person shooters go this is all i expected and a bit more. Yes, you are 'on rails' so the game leads you around each scene and you have to pick off zombies and nasties as you go, just like Time Crisis or Ghost Squad. This is done well and the slow pace that some people complain about is good as it builds up suspense and had me looking at corners and the edges of the screen for the next zombie to appear. It also allows you loads of time to shoot up the environment and pick up much needed ammo and first aid before you get jumped at again!
The graphics do look really good and very atmospheric, just the right amount of dark gloomy areas and glowing lights...
The idea of having a close-up melee weapon (a knife) is a good one, and really needed when the zombies close in or the camera twists suddenly and you got monsters in your face - slash 'em!
One thing i did find unusual at first was the fact that you 'share' a health bar but my initial misgivings about this were dispelled when me and my shooting partner would take out anything because if it got through it would in effect, hurt both of us, (no more 'ill just shoot stuff on the left side of the screen'). The same works for the actions, like dodging because when the button prompt comes up on-screen, you BOTH have to get it right or you BOTH take damage. Good for causing arguments!!
Any BAD THINGS about it? Well, it is difficult but that is no bad thing, if you have perseverence you will keep trying to beat it, and get your moneys worth. The targeting sights are too big and too thick and i think they can get in the way of what you are shooting, especially in 2 player mode. Sometimes the onscreen action prompts are misleading, for instance it says 'press b' but it means keep pressing B repeatedly and not just hold it down as i was used to from RE4. This caused arguments in my house as to who was letting the side down when you had to redo a section...!
But these are minor niggles really, its a very good 2-player shooter and way better than the poor reviews some of these reviewers have given. And with it currently being discounted in the shops to 24, its well worth a go. Im looking forward to saving the world, or at least Raccoon City!

3 out of 5 stars better 2-player   June 24, 2008
As a fan of the resident evil games and having completed most of them, i have to say that this game is very much faster and at times a bit more exciting. As you progress through the game the enemies get faster and more numerous which i always craved from the previous games! After all, the puzzles were challenging in previous games but the enemies were generally a no-brainer when it came to combat. Chronicles goes in the opposite direction and the puzzles consist of little more then pressing certain buttons or shaking the controllers at certain times, if you can call them puzzles, but the enemies start of easy but get alot harder!
I have to admit i found it alittle tedious on single player, but its alot more fun on 2-player!
i also find the lack of movement frustrating, the characters walk through the levels on their own, stopping when enemies appear then you shoot them. Sometimes you get a choice of 2 or more paths but other then that you can't control the characters at all bar looking slightly to left or right. I found that due to the lack of freedom to movement it was easy to put the control down and not get involved in the story.
As for the story, some levels are re-works of other games, and some levels are susposed to tie up various aspects between games and link the entire story arc together, but i found it a bit like the ada mini game on R.E.4, i.e. it doesn;t tie up very well and feels very rushed, just a quick game to squeeze a few more pennies from the whole franchise.
So its not so bad that i'll send it back in digust, but i only reach for it when a friend is round and we have time to kill, and it'll be one of the first games i'll trade in i imagine.
